UEFA has started a new year of Champions League, where 32 teams are once again competing for continental glory and domination. The respective clubs come from the far reaches of the continent, spreading from the cold terrain of Russia, to the warm beaches of Portugal, all aiming for the same thing. The coveted Champions League trophy, and the pride that comes packaged with it. However, to even get to the finals, each individual club has to go through series of games against small and large teams from around the continent, in various situations which include the qualifiers, the group stages, the quarter-finals, the semi-finals and then eventually the finals of the Champions League. There are also always teams that are expected to win, and others that have no expectations at all for the tournament, but the tournament is renowned for the upsets it produces. (as I wrote a post about previously) That is why every year, viewers tune in to watch UEFA’s annual tournament and the games they produce. Even though it is the early stages of the tournament, these games influence the latter stages of the tournament, and you will need to know about every game to fully understand the tournament. So in this post, I will be wrapping up the first matchday of the group stages, however, instead of attempting to write about it, I will link you to pages of highlights of all the games (footytube.com), so take your pick on which highlights you wish to view.
