Nike Mercurial Vapor VIII – Bright Mango/Dark Metallic Grey

You’ve got boot releases, and then you’ve got big boot releases. Today’s boot unveiling almost certainly falls within the later category. The name of the boot revealed today carries a lot of weight in the football boot world, and after months of expectation, Soccer Reviews becomes the first site on the planet to officially unveil this year’s biggest speed boot release, the Nike Mercurial Vapor VIII.

Months prior to the unveiling of the Vapor VIII, it was clear that this was going to be one of Nike’s boldest moves yet with the Mercurial. While the difference between the Mercurial Vapor Superfly II and III was little more than a new lick of paint, Nike have overhauled a speed boot that was falling behind adidas’ adiZero and arguably the Puma V1.11, which has become one of this season’s most surprising releases.

The new Vapor VIII has ditched many of the features seen on the Superfly III. First up, Nike have rolled out a brand new material onto the new Mercurial Vapor VIII. The boot has been crafted with a new soft, supple extra-thin teijin microfibre synthetic leather that is designed to adjust to the shape of the foot and it wraps around your foot like a second skin. Throw in the new contoured speed last that has been designed to deliver a superior fit and the two combine together to give the wearer maximum support and aid ball control at high speeds.

The snug fit is going to be one of the main draw cards of the new Mercurial Vapor VIII. This is all designed to lock the wearer’s foot into the boot and create instant acceleration. A lightweight perforated sockliner with textile top clothe also mirrors the natural foot shape and creates low profile cushioning. This is also enhanced by an interior heel that has an abundance of cushioning, while a clear coating prevents the foot from slipping.

But if it’s one thing that we’re very excited about the new Vapor is the new soleplate. Leaked images of the boot have indicated that Nike have moved away from the controversial SenseStud and towards something that is a little more stock standard. The boot features direct inject TPU studs that deliver superior acceleration, which is also aided by the two layers of glass fibre composite, which is another move from the carbon fibre soleplate on the current Superfly model. The twin heel studs is also another change from Nike, and if it works, could be somewhat of a revolutionary addition to the Vapor VIII. It is meant to ensure optimal penetration and stability.

The Mercurial Vapor VIII is also the first Nike boot to feature a new SG stud configuration. While nearly every SG boot on the market is made purely of metal studs, the new Vapor VIII has a combination of FG and SG studs, which is something many professionals around the world have been doing to their SG boots for quite some time now. This will be known as the Pro range of boots and it will be rolled out onto Nike’s other silos (CTR, T90 and Tiempo) in time for EURO 2012. It brings the professional experience to the average footballer, and it’s something we can’t wait to test out!

The new Mercurial Vapor VIII has been kept in the shadows for quite some time now, yet professionals around the world have been secretly disguising their Vapor VIIIs as Superfly IIIs. Now it’s ready for you to wear them. The boots are expected to go on retail for £150 and will be on presale from the 19th of March, with a full release scheduled for the 1st of April. Ronaldo will, of course, be the headline athlete for the range. But we will also see an increased role for Neymar in Nike’s advertising campaign of the Mercurial, so perhaps Nike is expecting a big year from the South American!

Nothing creates quite an impact as a Mercurial launch, and this has certainly been one of the most talked about boot releases of the past few years. Has it hit the spot for you? Or is it another own goal by Nike? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.

187 Grams is the listed weight for the FG version.
The pro versions will be weighing a little bit more.

  14. Charlie

I heard the weight will be around 6.0-6.4oz or whatever the correct unit of measurement it is. The same weight as the Adidas Micoach Adizero’s.

  15. Brady Fiero

we going to see a leather version of this at all?

  16. Aaron

I love how people still give a damn about weight, its ridiculous, people stick a pack of sugar on the back of your boots during a match, and tell me you notice a difference haha. I like lightweight boots, but when your talking 0-50 gram differences honestly i’d go for the heavier boots if its better in other areas.

  20. Garrett

Those fg blades just look scarily thin to me, like they could crack and fall of at any moment! :/

  21. Ahmed Al-Raisi

Looks great in the ads, much better than what the Leaks have shown. If I have the money, gonna buy it since it is 130 pounds cheaper!!! Thanks Nike, you never let me down.

  22. jack

what is the reason behind the four different colors at the back heel? (blue, green, orange and red)

  23. whitecapsfc

Why does everyone care about weight so much? If you’re fast you’re fast, a few grams shaved off a boot isn’t gonna change a thing. The Superfly weight was fine, the reason i wear a boot is because i feel comfy in it, adizero’s are too wide for my feet and honestly when i do wear them i don’t feel any less tired at the end of a game nor do i feel faster. It’s all a misleading from brands, wear what’s comfy not something that seems cool because it weighs barely nothing.

I have worn every silo of Nike soccer and you can definitely feel a difference in weight between a laser and a vapor……

    • Tyler

I don’t feel faster in light boots but I’m definitely less fatigued after 90 minutes when I where them.

Personally, I think shoe weight does matter, because by using engineering logic each step you take in, say, a 10.0 oz. shoe, you are lifting up those 10 oz. This means that throughout a game, you lift up 10.0 oz. multiplied by however many steps you took. This means that throughout the course of a game, in which about 6 miles (10,000 meters) are run (Kirkendall online) and for each mile there are about 950 steps with a 1.75 meter stride, you are lifting over 9500 ounces, or 590 lbs. However, by reducing this weight to 6 ounces, the player only lifts 5700 ounces, or 350lbs. That leads to a whopping difference of 240 lbs., which is about the weight of a 68 year old Caucasian male in the 95th percentile for his weight (Halls online).

Yeah sure, but still i’m talking about a tiny amount of weight dropped between the Superfly and the Vapor VIII so you won’t notice a difference in that respect. It’s like the difference between a leather Adizero and a synthetic one, not much. But like i said before if you find a boot comfy then wear it, weight doesn’t factor to me at all. I had Adipower sl’s, same weight as the Superfly yet were no where near as comfy so i sold them.

  25. emil

    whitecapsfc, so true!

  26. Michael

the heel appears to be disastrous

  27. Brayan

Yes!!!!!!! Finally they are released!!! Just when I was thinking about switching to adizero’s, Nike pulls me back!

  28. meme goal

    cant wait to get mine!!

  29. Kip

The color is great, especially from the leaked photos. But the heel is just hideous. I don’t understand all the different colors and how they are positioned. I wouldn’t have cared if they would have kept them all the same color set, for each shoe colorway. But if each colorway to come has this mixed array of colored shaped, that will be something to push me away. I’ll have to see them in person for a final verdict, but lets just say I’m glad I got my T90 IV while they were on sale this winter…

  30. Brayan

For some reason I feel like the colors in the back mean the different versons of these cleats they are going to release. (their colors)

  31. Rezarfr

Yuck, nasty colorway, even nike’s latest invention still cant beat the adizeros and also adipure sl

  32. Colin

What’s the weight? I love them! I switched from Nike to Adidas a couple years ago, but I’m really considering these!

  33. Jürgen

I am a bit suprised by the price, 150GBP doesn’t sound too much? Compared to the prices of the current Vapor and the Superfly, 150GBP almost sounds “cheap” or am I mistaken?

  34. idin

I personally think this Vapor would have looked better without the small Nike ticket on the front of the boot. It makes it look like a miracle, and cheap to be honest.

    • hugh

No im fine with some toned down branding. God Forbid Im not a giant walking nike tick mark. I’m waiting for the NikeID so I can get a straight blackout

      • idin

if you think about it, it’s probably more nike branding than the last vapor, considering the Vapor VII had only the big Nike tick on the front boot. The Vapor VIII put a big Nike tick in the middle AND front. Agreed, A Blackout VIII would be good.

    MINE WILL BE HERE TOMORROW!!!!
