With his on-going racism scandal becoming the most talked about thing in England, the FA have decided that John Terry is no longer worthy of the Three Lions’ band.
Terry, who was first handed the captaincy following England’s disappointing 2006 World Cup campaign, allegedly made racist remarks to Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand.
Reports claim the Chelsea man learned of the FA’s decision when chief David Bernstein first spoke to Terry on Friday, however, the FA has yet to confirm that particular fact.
With the Terry case set to take place in early July, many believe that the unsettled issue will hinder the defender’s performances in the upcoming Euros.
A statement released by the FA confirmed that the decision to strip John Terry’s captaincy has been made by the 14-man board.
“Following the decision to adjourn the court case against John Terry to July, The Football Association confirm he will not captain the England team until the allegations against him are resolved.”
“The FA Board expected the trial to be concluded prior to the European Championship. Further to Wednesday’s confirmation that the trial will not take place until after the tournament, the Board has discussed the matter in detail and has collectively decided it is in the interests of all parties that John has the responsibilities of captaincy removed at this time.”
The English footballing body has said that their decision does not determine Terry’s guilt or innocence in the matter. They explained that Terry was relieved of his duties as England captain simple because of the mass amounts of pressure involved in the role.
“This decision has been taken due to the higher profile nature of the England captaincy, on and off the pitch, and the additional demands and requirements expected of the captain leading into and during a tournament.”
The matter of who will replace John Terry has yet to be decided, though former temporary captain Rio Ferdinand has already ruled himself out of the candidacy.
