The match-up everyone was waiting for… and the Golden Boot was there!
The US vs England game was one of the most highly anticipated group matches across the globe, and the Golden Boot was sitting 10 rows up from behind the goal where Robert Green made a name for himself around the world (we’ll get into that later!). Amidst all the England fans, this was the Golden Boot’s first World Cup match, and being US fans, it did not start out well. With Steven Gerrard’s wonderfully crafted goal early on in the match, it was always going to be an uphill battle for the Yankees and their fans who were the butt of many taunts and chants. However, right before half time, Clint Dempsey of Fulham took an ambitious shot to say the least, and as the whole world now knows, Robert Green launched his name into the stratosphere when he made the mistake that made him infamous! A shot which should have been routine enough for an experienced keeper like Robert Green, bounced out of the hands of the West Ham goalkeeper, and petered into the England goal (you have to give him credit though for bouncing back and making a wonder save against a point blank Jozy Altidore)!
It then remained a dead-lock for the rest of the game, ending 1-1. The US fans were definitely outclassed during the night, with little organization while the opposite fans had tons of chants and often filled the stands of Rustenburg’s stadium with ‘God Save the Queen.’ One thing the US fans did get out of the game however was the chant, “We all dream of a team of Robert Green’s, a team of Robert Green’s, a team of Robert Green’s!”
Player of the Game:
Tim Howard! The US keeper, despite earning a nasty blow to the ribs from Emile Heskey, carried the US team on his shoulders with a number of outstanding saves! The Everton goal stopper was wearing the Nike Tiempo Legend III Elites.
