The Barclays Premier League has kicked off this year with tons of surprises and upsets, much like it always does. However, a significant difference in this campaign from last year’s, is the goal scorers. Usually, you expect to see all the same names at the top of the goal scoring chart, where the same players seem to dominate every season, (Cristiano Ronaldo, Fernando Torres, Emmanuel Adebayor, and others) yet this season, there are a bunch of no names (sorry, but they really are unknown) tearing up the scoring sheets. They seem to be unstoppable, because almost every game they go into, they score a goal, but the question is, who are these players, and how are they scoring? The article today will be based on only the current top three scorers of the Premier League, and my intake on these particular players.
- Gabriel Abonglahor- The Aston Villa hitman is unlike the two players I will mention shortly, because he is well known among the fans and viewers of the Premier League. He’s been in the league for what seems like forever, and he’s always netted a few goals during the season with great talent. However, he has surprised me this season so far, because he hardly ever is in the top five scorers chart, yet this season he is scoring like crazy, for his club, Aston Villa. He has already scored four goals in six games, and is tied at the top of the leader board at the beginning of the 08-09 Barclays Premier League season. We’ll be tuning in on him to see if he can keep his firepower going!
- John Carew- While one Aston Villa player at the top of the leader board with goals is unusual, two is unheard of! John Carew has also been in outstanding form, with the Norwegian also having scored four goals in six games. The large in stature Scandinavian, has also played for big clubs once upon a time, including the likes of Lyon and AS Roma. Yet again, he has never had the highest tally of goals in a campaign either, but here we are, discussing how he shares the Golden Boot for now with one teammate and one player from an opposition team. With both Abonglahor and Carew performing well, Aston Villa can be looking for a high place finish this year.
- Amr Zaki- With four goals in several games, Zaki is looking like a contender for this year’s Golden Boot Award, but wait a second… Who is Amr Zaki??? I hate to say it, but this player really is virtually unknown. I had never heard of this player before he scored a brace in Wigan‘s 5-0 thrashing of Hull City, and even then he was still insignificant on my lists, but with continued goals, Zaki is looking mightily impressive. The Egyptian national has been tipped by some to go on and win the Golden Boot at the end of the year. If so, this man’s reputation will surpass those of his wildest dreams.
These players have been amazingly impressive with lots of goals, but will they be able to keep their streaks alive? That is the right question.
