Review Summary
When it happens on the street. When pigeons are your audience. When a set of headlights illuminate the field. When a meg means more than a goal. When it’s pavement, cement, brick, dirt, or dust. When nasty is a compliment. When the boundaries are curbs, walls, or fences. When a parking lot clears. When there are no rules, no refs, and no cards. When there are only four people. When it’s too cold, too late, too windy, and too dark.
When it’s time, or when it’s not. IT’S CALLE.
You may or may not have heard about Calle yet, but the important part of that is the yet. Calle, a street soccer brand have made a huge splash in their several years of existence, and now you can see their products around the globe on all varieties of people. Their trendy new look on the game and its products have made them popular like I said around the world, and they have certainly left their impression on the game, and SER!
Calle sent us their debut shoe, the Rilo, and we’d like to thank the company for making this review possible!
After experiencing success in the apparel market, Calle decided to venture into the shoe side of things as well with the Rilo. SER, in an effort to keep you, the viewers up to date on all things related to the Beautiful Game, received a pair of the shoes from Calle a year ago, and have been testing them out ever since. The reason for this long review process was to see how the shoes would hold up in a setting they’re most likely to be placed in; a daily one. Seeing as these aren’t soccer cleats, we decided to use a different review format, and to kick off the review, we’d like to share with you what users on Soccer.com are saying about the shoes.
Player: Mike (San Antonio, TX USA)
These are comfortable, tough, and stylish. I’ve used these for both leisure and playing street soccer. They really hold up well. Comfortable look great for casual wear. I’ve used regular indoors for street play before and was a mistake, they ripped within the first few times of playing. If you actually play street soccer this shoe is a must. They would probably be little hot if you used them for either indoor or turf play.
Player: Charlie (Denver, CO)
I just got these shoes, and I am blown away. They are so comfortable and perfectly made. Not only are the insoles perfect, the outside is durable and perfect for street soccer, or even normal wear. Why would you not want these?! The Rilo’s have a good price for what you get. They are much better than whatever NIke and Adidas has ever come out with. If these were Nike shoes you would see LeBron in them, and they would be sold for $130 because they are such a great shoe! I just learned about CALLE, and now I am in love. EVERYONE BUY THIS SHOE!!!
Player: Lyle Worthingham (WA state)
For those players out there that can only handle 5 oz on your feet because you have wuss legs, these shoes might not be for you. For those players out there that ball in harsh conditions like concrete, asphalt, tennis courts, etc, these shoes are for you. I had my Nike 5′s for about 2 months before they went right through the outsole. So I got the Calle Rilo’s. Once you get over the weight, you’ll love them. Very comfortable. I have flat feet so it helped me to cut the insole a bit, and now they are perfect.
Player: Cory C (Santa Barbara, CA)
Had my first pair for seven months, wearing them every day to school and playing indoor in them at least once a week. Lasted me seven months before a split formed on the outside left of the left shoe. I think it may be because of the shoe’s incorporation of the slight “perforations” along certain parts of the shoe perhaps not the right term. It might be worth adding that I do have wider feet, and although the shoes don’t feel “cramped” by any means, this could have helped in the splitting on that side… The right shoe, however, is still in perfect condition after 7 monthsmaybe it’s just the way I plant/pivot that put extra stress on that portion of the shoe. Regardless, I they have great touch for indoor, look great wherever, and for the most part, are incredibly durable. Hopefully Calle takes the issue with the materials into consideration if it does prove to be a common concern for their next revision of the Rilo. Until then, I’ll be bagging another pair as soon as I finish this review of my first. Hope my thoughts helped.
These are but a few of the raving reviews the Calle Rilo received, and you can see more by clicking on this link.
Obviously, the Rilo made an impact on its wearers, but how did it hold up for the SER ‘tests’?
Weight- First off, like Lyle said, the Rilo’s are heavy. Weighing in at 13.4 oz, they aren’t nearly as light as other indoor soccer shoes. The important thing though is, these are not indoor soccer shoes. They are meant for the streets, and they had to sacrifice weight for durability. After getting used to the weight, the Rilo’s will suit you just fine.
Durability- Recurring words in reviews about the Rilo are ‘durable’ and ‘tough’. Calle are serious about making the only street specific soccer shoes in the world durable. After a year of use, they are holding up very well, except for one thing Cory touched on. It may just be our two pairs of Rilo’s, or it may be all of them, but on the upper, where the black and white leather meet, it ripped apart on one of the shoes. It’s not a major problem, and they are still very use able, it is just something Calle will need to look at on their next shoe. Other then that, the shoes like I said are very durable and will definitely last you a good school year! Picture above.
Design- A great first design for Calle, one which both others and I who own the shoes enjoy. SER was sent a pair of the White/Black ones, but I definitely prefer the blackout ones. A nice little extra Calle have thrown in with the Rilo is two pairs of laces; a black pair and a white pair.
Performance- You need to know what you are getting before you purchase the Rilo. It’s not a shoe that is meant for an outdoor 11 aside game, so don’t come in thinking you can power a ball like Roberto Carlos with these shoes. They simply are not meant for that. Just like Calle advertise, they are for small sides games on the streets!
Price- Selling for $69.99 USD, the Calle Rilo comes at a very mediocre price for indoor shoes (remember, they aren’t actually indoor shoes though!). However, for a shoe as durable as it is, you are paying $69.99 for a pair of shoes that can not only be your indoor or Calle shoes, they can be your school kicks as well! A good price for a good pair of shoes!
Conclusion- As the first shoes specifically made for outdoor soccer (Calle) and the first pair of shoes for the company, Calle have done very well! I’m not one to say that lightly, and I’m backed up by all the users who agree with me! If you haven’t tried out Calle products yet, you need to! They are a great brand who will certainly do a lot in the future!
